The positive with genius is the creative or production from characteristic talents. Originality must consist in the fruitfulness of talents. One finds with some people works of genius with which here and there through their imagination unfinished ideas are brought forth, which give us a view of new images. Enthusiasts appear to be people whom one could call failed geniuses; nature did not finish making them geniuses. The philosopher is always pleased when he finds such people from whom many characteristics can be drawn; such was Swedenborg; his originality bordered on deludedness.3 Therefore he was also one of whom the ancients said, genius and madness are not far removed.4 The enthusiast and the fanatic give the material against which the characteristic of genius stands out. Some people can bring understanding into the enthusiasm of the imagination; for such as those who want to find all mysteries in commenting on Virgil or another author; thus can a skillful man bring out another understanding from all the most unruly ideas.
